Pathways to the Future

As educators, we have adapted our teaching methods and styles with our environment in order to help our students learn and retain the course material. New approaches are developed to engage students, effectively teach concepts, and achieve learning outcomes as technology continues to grow and physical classroom space evolves. Looking forward to the future of education we examine the various pathways taken to teach our students. This could be a new form of assessment, having students participate in collaborative work, or using a different classroom design. These developments enhance teaching and learning, which may be different or challenging, but overall provide students with a better learning experience. During the FACET Retreat, we will share our pathways and how these lead to the future.

Retreat Registration

This retreat is open to FACET members who may invite three faculty guests. FACET members and their faculty member guests may attend for free with pre-registration online. Members bringing personal guests must purchase their meals through registration.

Online registration has closed. There will be an on-site registration fee of $75 and a no-show fee of $75 for those who do not cancel prior to the event.

If FACET is covering part of your hotel expenses, please do not book the reservation yourself. The FACET office or your campus Associate Director(s) will inform you of this funding. Please contact us directly at facet@iu.edu and we will reserve the room for you.

Parking

Self-parking is located directly across the street from the hotel at Pan Am Plaza’s underground parking garage; rate is $28 for overnight parking. Valet service is available at the hotel: $30 for day parking and $40 for overnight guests. Alternatively, you may park in other nearby lots/garages or IUPUI permit lots are a mile away.

The venue is adjacent to the convention center and one block from Lucas Oil Stadium. The hotel has a rich history, as it was originally a train station built in 1888.

Our Future Starts Now

In this session, we will engage in an activity to explore our visions for our world 20 years from now using an anthropological technique called “ethnographic futures.” We’ll use our results to generate a conversation about what we may need to do differently in higher education now in order to provide our students with the knowledge and skills they will need for 2041.

Rebecca Torstrick has been on the faculty of Indiana University South Bend since 1996, developed the joint anthropology major with IU Northwest, served as Director of the Women’s Studies Program from 2004-2007, and as Associate Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences from 2008-2012. She earned an MAEd in Human Resources Management (1981) and her PhD in Anthropology (1993) from Washington University-St. Louis and her BA in Anthropology from University of Illinois-Urbana (1976). At Indiana University, Dr. Torstrick has been the recipient of the W. George Pinnell Award for Outstanding Service and the President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, as well as awards from her campus for Distinguished Teaching and her college’s award for Outstanding Advising. She is a member of the Faculty Academy on Excellence in Teaching (FACET).

The health and safety of FACET members and guests is of utmost importance. We will continue to monitor the COVID-19 dashboard and ensure we are in compliance with IU's policies and guidance. The encouragingly high 92.2 percent vaccination rate of faculty and staff across all campuses (as of August 26), gives us hope that we can safely gather in person. We are also making the following changes:

Facial coverings will be required for all attendees when inside the building.
Breaks have been increased to 20 minutes to allow for the air in the rooms to circulate twice.
Meals will be plated and appetizers will be passed by servers.

We are encouraging attendees to take advantage of IU's free COVID asymtompatic testing available on most campuses. Ideally, the test should be three days prior to the conference (October 19, 2021).

Lastly, please be sure to review the travel policies and reimbursement process on your campus. This may be different than previous years due to the pandemic.
