Rhythm of Renewal: Rediscovering Your Circle of Control
We are continuing the spirit of a retreat with workshops and activities that focus on us individually and as a community to help you feel rested, rejuvenated, refreshed, reinvigorated. We want to help you re-develop strategies of renewal to empower you to move forward with positive momentum. Let’s use this time to filter out the noise and explore ways to sustain that rhythm.
You may use your EM permit at nearby campus parking lots 71 and 80 (see intercampus parking). Those with accessbility needs or who don't have a permit, may park in the visitor garage beneath University Tower for $7/day.

In this interactive forum, key concepts and evidence-based practices of effective teaching and learning will be highlighted, and attendees will have opportunities to discuss what we know from research and share their own experiences and insight as they wish. This talk is indebted to the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) book study group at IU Columbus, which is co-sponsored by the IU Columbus Center for Teaching and Learning and FACET. Originally formed by a group of faculty members who became Mosaic active learning teaching fellows, the community transformed into a robust inter- and multi-disciplinary membership featuring faculty and staff, including FACET members, across campuses in the IU system and outside of it. Each semester, a SoTL book is selected, and dedicated discussion leaders present and reflect on the reading, enabling a highly engaged community book study of teaching and learning across disciplines, faculty and staff positions, and campuses. We learn best together, just as our students do, and this P. A. Mack Forum will enable us to think about effective teaching in a myriad of ways.
Julie Goodspeed-Chadwick, Ph.D. is an Indiana University Distinguished Professor and IU Indianapolis Chancellor’s Professor of English. She is an affiliate faculty member in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies and directs the Office of Student Research at IU Columbus, which she founded in 2010. (In 2027, she will be transferred to the Department of English at IU Indianapolis.) Her research and teaching areas include modernist and contemporary American literature; transatlantic modernism; literature by women; women’s, gender, and sexuality studies; and trauma studies. Her scholarship and teaching have been recognized with national book awards and statewide teaching awards. She has written numerous peer-reviewed articles and book chapters about teaching in her subject areas. With Michael Morrone, Deborah Whaley, and Karissa Rector, she co-edited Quick Hits for Creativity in the Classroom (Indiana University Press, 2026). She is proud to be a FACET member.
Taking seriously the focus of this year's FACET retreat, Rhythm of Renewal: Rediscovering Your Circle of Control, we will visit one of my former colleague's critiques of my career: Social networks are not an idle pursuit for me. True enough; yet I see it as a strength — I don't hang my particular brand of sociology on a hook outside the door when I enter the classroom, a faculty meeting, or the challenges of my personal life. In this Memorial Lecture, I will begin by briefly connecting action and socialization frameworks from a social network research perspective to our own careers — teaching , research and service careers; local, national and global careers; family and life experience careers. Then, quite literally we will, together, engage a research-based, tactile, network method to visualize the current structure of our own networks. This includes their number, size, salience, and overlap. By doing so, I hope to provide one strategy to ground yourself in this time of uncertainty and change. Where is your interactional control? Can you find it? Restore it? Reject it? In other words, How can rethinking your circles of control refresh your life and sustain you through chaos and challenge to be refreshed and reinvigorated?
Bernice Pescosolido is Distinguished Professor of Sociology at Indiana University and Founding Director of the Indiana Consortium for Mental Health Services Research (ICMHSR) and the new Irsay Family Research Institute that targets research in the sociomedical sciences. She is an elected member of both the National Academy of Medicine and the National Academy of Sciences. Trained as a medical sociologist at Yale, her research focuses broadly on how social networks and culture provide insights into health, illness and healing phenomena, and more specifically on four areas – stigma, suicide, health care use, and health care systems. Her concerns have spanned local, national and international questions and problems, primarily targeting mental illness.
This year's registration will be limited to FACET member and nominees, and special guests for ceremonies. Each member will be able to invite one of their non-FACET member colleagues as a faculty guest.
Online registration is open through May 15. Those attending only a ceremonoy may purchase an evening meal ticket on the online form, this applies to personal guests as well (spouse, family, friend, etc.). On-site registrations may be available during the retreat, depending on availability.

A limited number of rooms are available at the Hampton Inn and Homewood Suites Canal IUPUI. Reservations made after April 27 are subject to availability and standard hotel rates. Please note that each hotel has a separate booking link, though both are located within the same building.
There are two IU parking lots across the street where you may use your campus permit, or you may choose to park in the hotel garage for $42/night. It is a 12-15 minute walk to the venue.
