Richard Gunderman (FACET Class of 2003) received the 2022 P.A. Mack Award for his distinguished service to teaching that significantly and demonstrably advances the goals of FACET.
Gunderman is the Chancellor's Professor of Radiology, Pediatrics, Medical Education, Philosophy, Liberal Arts, Philanthropy, and Medical Humanities and Health Studies at IUPUI. He was nomiated by former student and recent FACET Inductee Emily Beckman, Assistant Professor and Director of Medical Humanities and Health Studies.
The P.A. Mack Selection Committee was composed of Julie Saam (Chair), Jon Becker, Carol Hostetter, Robin K. Morgan, and Parul Khurana. The Committee stated, "The breadth and depth of Dr. Gunderman’s accomplishments surrounding the enhancing of student learning is highly impressive. He has touched the lives of thousands of students through his career, many of whom nominated him for teaching accolades throughout his career. For this and his passion, commitment, and selflessness, we would like to recognize Dr. Gunderman as the 2022 recipient of the P.A. Mack Distinguished Service to Teaching award."
In her nomination letter, Beckman stated Gunderman has demonstrated “pedagogical innovation in part through his development and implementation of new courses and curricula… (overwhelmingly) consistent and significant contribution to student growth and reflection… cultivate[ing] the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning through many teaching publications with significant reach [and], finally, foster[ing] personal renewal in the commitment to teaching as he develops new courses, mentors students through their own teaching and development and supports a number of different programs throughout IU.”
Gunderman is a ten-time recipient of the IU Trustees Teaching Award, and in 2015 received the IU School of Medicine's inaugural Inspirational Educator Award. He has won numerous awards outside of the university, such as the 2008 Outstanding Educator by the Radiological Society of North America, the 2011 American Roentgen Ray Society Berlin Scholar in Professionalism, and in 2020, the Association of University Radiologists awarded him its Gold Medal and elected him to its inaugural class of fellows.
"As impressive as all of this is, even moreso is Dr. Gunderman’s simple presence in the classroom. I have observed his teaching for nearly 14 years, and remain, along with his students, inspired each time I find myself in his classroom or attending one of his lectures."
Gunderman was recognized at the FACET Annual Retreat on June 9, 2022, followed by a P.A. Mack Forum given by Mark Hoyert, 2019 P.A. Mack Award recipient. Kathy Johnson, 2021 P.A. Mack Award recipient, presented earlier that morning. Gunderman will be invited to present at the upcoming Retreat in June 2023.
