On July 1 Andy Gavrin, FACET Class of 2000, Professor of Physics, and Chair of the Physics Department at IUPUI, will become FACET’s Mack Center Director.
Andy looks to continue the momentum and build on the Mack Center’s successes under Beth Kern’s leadership. Kern, Class of 2000, Professor of Accounting, and Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs at IUSB, implemented important innovations for the Mack Center, including the SoTL 101 series, a two-step application process for Mack Fellows that provides all applicants constructive feedback on their Fellow applications, and the Mack Camp that takes place at FACET’s Annual Retreat. Join me in thanking Beth for her service.
Since arriving at IUPUI in 1995, Gavrin has devoted a great deal of effort to creating ways to improve physics teaching, including "Just-in-Time Teaching (JiTT),” and Higher Ed teaching in general through his studies about the use of clickers in the classroom and uses of social media to encourage students’ connections with each other and ongoing engagement with course materials. His enthusiasm, creativity, and scholarly approach to teaching contribute greatly to the literature on teaching and learning and to his colleagues’ success in the classroom.
Gavrin has served on the Mack Center Advisory Board since 2012 and actively participated in the Mack Camps.
His focus on teaching has been recognized by many awards at IUPUI, by the American Association of Physics Teacher’s Homer L. Dodge Citation for Distinguished Service and its David Halliday and Robert Resnick Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Physics Teaching.
Please join me in congratulating Andy on his appointment.
