Kathryn Berlin, Ph.D., is an associate professor and Undergraduate Program Director in the Department of Health Sciences. The Health Sciences degree prepares students for clinically focused health-care careers and entry into professional programs. She joined the department in 2018 after being recruited for the Program Director position specifically to focus on teaching, learning, and curricula activities. Her background in curriculum design, program development, and research in teaching and learning were reasons why the faculty in Health Sciences asked her to apply. Subsequently, she was inducted into FACET in 2022, a goal she had aspired to since joining Indiana University.
Kathy’s SoTL research focuses primarily on integrating metacognitive and self-regulatory skills in the first-year curriculum to improve the university goal of “belonging, transitioning, and planning.” Dubbed the “Learning Strategies Project,” this endeavor focuses on teaching students how to learn early in their collegiate career. The project has proven successful and has been adopted by others in the school and university. She continues to pursue research in this area as well as examining the role of dialogic feedback on student’s emotional well-being, improving active learning in the classroom and online, and integrating global interactions for students through virtual exchanges.
Kathy took on the role of Editor for FACET’s online publication, the Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, in October of 2022. She elected to serve in this capacity based on her 12 years of prior experience in the publishing arena as a writer/analyst, editor, managing editor, and associate publisher of cable television trade publications. Kathy was then selected to serve in the role of SoTL and Mack Center Director, beginning July of 2024.
Kathy believes strongly in the pursuit of excellence in teaching. She has received several department, school, and university awards including the IUPUI Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2024, the Barbara D. Jackson Outstanding First-Year Student Advocate Award in 2023, the Trustees Teaching Award in 2022, and the School of Health and Human Sciences Faculty award for Sustained Teaching Excellence in 2021. In addition, she was chosen as an inaugural Fellow for the Course Material Transformation Fellowship Program in 2021, an inaugural Fellow and founding member of the Digital Gardeners Fellows Program in 2021, and a member of the AAC&U ePortfolio Team for IUPUI in 2021.
Kathy’s education includes a bachelor’s of kinesiology from Texas Women’s University with a K-12 physical education teaching certification and a secondary teaching certification in Business. She earned her master’s in physical education from Indiana University (Indianapolis). Kathy earned a dual title doctorate in health promotion and disease prevention and gerontology from Purdue University in 2012. She is a certified strength and conditioning specialist.
