In October 2024, FACET’s Statewide Steering Committee approved an alternate process for inducting Presidential Teaching Award winners’ into FACET. These university-wide Distinguished Teaching Awards are among the highest and most prestigious teaching awards that Indiana University offers. They are highly selective and require significant documentation of teaching excellence including a reflective statement and peer reviews.
Application process
We invite a FACET-eligible faculty member who has received one of the President’s Distinguished Teaching Awards to submit a CV and Statement of Interest in joining FACET as an alternative to our standard dossier membership process. Those who choose to accept the invitation are asked to submit their CV and statement of interest to the FACET office at facet@iu.edu by January 15 of the year in which they wish to become a FACET member.
The statement of interest shall be no more than four pages. The overarching purpose is to describe how the interested faculty member sees themselves engaging in teaching excellence and FACET. The letter should discuss the following:
- Substantive evidence of an element of their teaching that conveys excellence.
- Evidence that they would actively support and advance FACET’s mission.
- Commentary about their continued commitment to teaching excellence.
Review Process
The interested faculty member’s statement and CV are reviewed by the Membership and Selection Director to determine if there is prima facie merit to induct the interested faculty member into FACET. While there is a presumption of merit, the Membership and Selection Director’s detailed knowledge of the selection process provides an opportunity to verify the standing of the faculty member, their commitment to ongoing teaching excellence, and interest in our community. If determined to have merit, the FACET Executive Director will bring the case to the FACET Steering Committee for discussion and final vote on inducting the faculty member into FACET. The FACET office will communicate the Steering Committee’s decision by early March. We welcome new members into FACET during an induction ceremony at our annual retreat which typically takes place in May.
