Last fall, Karissa and I were ruminating about FACET’s operations, which led us to ask what if we could restructure FACET’s organization to make day-to-day operations and decision-making more inclusive? And as we discussed further, we articulated a few significant potential benefits of restructuring:
- Creating more leadership opportunities that have clear impact
- Including more people in our day-to-day, ongoing initiatives that span a wide range
- Making the overall FACET budget more predictable from year to year
- Enhancing business continuity
We drafted a plan, sought initial input from the Statewide Steering Committee and IU’s Academic Leadership Council, and eventually finalized a new structure with the Steering Committee. In the new structure, an executive committee administers day-to-day operations and initiatives. The Executive Committee includes an Executive Director, Diversity Director and Historian, Membership and Selection Director, SoTL and Mack Center Director, Programs and Services Director, and Operations Director (Karissa—ex officio). Each member of the executive committee has primary responsibility for a portfolio of FACET-related matters and will report on activities in their portfolio for executive committee input. Directors will receive an annual stipend and renewable term. Any FACET member, whether still an active faculty member or retired, is eligible for these director positions. I’m excited about the possibilities of this more inclusive organizational structure.
Further details for the director positions are available on our website. The start date is dependent on whether the reorganization is implemented on January 1, 2024 or July 1, 2024. Applications for any of the director positions should be sent to Karissa Rector at facet@iu.edu by September 1 for best consideration and include a current CV and a letter (up to three pages maximum) explaining the applicant’s engagement with FACET and interest in the position.
Additionally, we are seeking a Membership Liaison to provide central support for the membership selection process. The liaison will begin their duties in Fall 2023, term length is negotiable. Beyond the director and liaison positions, many opportunities remain to contribute to FACET’s mission such as serving on the Steering Committee, taking on the Campus Associate Director role, or serving as a member of one of our other committees.
