Dr. Clark Barwick has been selected as a Bender FACET Faculty Fellow for Fall 2021 through Spring 2022. Barwick (Class of 2018) is a Senior Lecturer in Communication, Professional, and Computer Skills at the IU Bloomington Kelley School of Business, and Associate Director for the FACET Bloomington campus.
His teaching and scholarship focus on writing, African American studies, and the global coffee trade. Barwick is an affiliate faculty member with the IU Center for Research on Race & Ethnicity in Society, the IU Food Institute, and African Studies. He has published on the pedagogies of race, and he is a two-time recipient of the IU Trustees Teaching Award. In 2021, Barwick was named Outstanding Faculty Mentor by IU’s Center for Excellence for Women & Technology (CEW&T), and he was recognized by Sprudge as one of twenty global “game changers” in the world of specialty coffee. An interview with him can be found here.
Barwick's Bender Fellow project will have two components. In the fall, he will complete data gathering to define active member profiles and determine who our active members are. One hypothesis is that FACET members’ activity is on a continuum from inactive to highly-active engagement. In the spring, Barwick will work on a set of recommendations to encourage increased, diverse participation in FACET initiatives, at both the campus and university levels. The ultimate goal is to implement sustainable solutions for maintaining high levels of membership engagement that will benefit FACET for years to come.
“It’s an honor to be selected for this prestigious fellowship. Professor Bender had such a significant impact on how we approach teaching at Indiana University, and I will carry forward in her spirit as I analyze the current strengths of FACET’s membership and determine how we can best position ourselves for pedagogical leadership, innovation, and collaboration in the coming years. I think the time is right for this kind of analysis, and I look forward to speaking with as many FACET stakeholders as possible.”
