2020 FACET Retreat

FACET Creativity and Experience

FACET is reimagining our retreat events by hosting a series of events this academic year. This reimagining is an ongoing process; however, we are continuing with the 2020 retreat theme, Creativity and Experience: Enriching Teaching and Learning. Our goal is to arrive at an engaging, renewing, and illuminating series.

In academia, many of us think of creativity as something that applies only to the arts. However, as teachers we actively participate in the creative process whenever we develop curricula, step into a classroom, or even engage with students online. In fashioning experiences using our own inventiveness, we help guide students to become creative and reflective thinkers. At the same time that we foster intellectual growth, we also enrich their lives, both now and in the future. In designing, running, and evaluating the experiences we fashion for our students, we utilize a variety of creative practices and habits of mind.

Class of 2020 Induction Ceremony

September 24, 2020
5:00 - 6:00 PM

Please join us for a virtual celebration in honor of the Class of 2020 FACET Members! The ceremony will be similar to the in-person version, but with a few adjustments and surprises.

Crisis Conscious Teaching

October 2, 2020
12:00 - 1:30 PM

Teaching during a crisis, while new to many of us, is not new to the profession (think Hurricane Katrina, 9-11, trauma-informed pedagogy). This interactive session will feature an introduction to four key components we gleaned from the literature about teaching during regional, national or international crises. We will introduce these components, talk about why each is important to consider, and then facilitate reflection and discussion about how people can address these in their face-to-face and virtual classrooms now.

Please feel free to bring your own lunch during the session!

This session is hosted by the FACET Fort Wayne Associate Directors, Marcia Dixson and Yvonne Zubovic. Dixson is the Associate Vice Chancellor for Teaching and Learning and Associate Professor of Communication at Purdue Fort Wayne. Zubovic is an Associate Professor of Mathematics at Purdue Fort Wayne.

Upcoming Events

Innovate Awards
The Innovate Awards Virtual Ceremony will take place on February 12, 2021. Finalists are preparing their multi-media presentations for submission by November 30. Online voting will run January 4-31, 2021.

Campus-Hosted Webinars
Campuses will have the opportunity to host an event in the Creativity and Experience series. These events can be hosted by an individual campus or collaboratively. If you have an idea, please reach out to your campus Associate Director (formerly known as campus liaison).

Quick Hits Call for Proposals
The retreat planning committee is also currently working on a call for submissions for Quick Hits: Bringing Creativity to the Classroom. The plan is to release the volume at the June 2021 retreat. At this point, we envision that this volume will harken back to an earlier time when all Quick Hits were authored by FACET members. We intend to use the Pressbooks publishing platform and make the book available through the Kindle store.

Annual Retreat
The in-person retreat will take place on June 11-13, 2021 at the Sheraton in Jeffersonville, IN.
