Nomination Path

Faculty may self-nominate or be nominated by any full-time faculty member or administrator familiar with the candidate's teaching and contributions to student learning. Nominations may be submitted using the online Nomination Form (preferred) or by contacting the candidate's Campus Associate Director.

This page provides an overview of the nomination process, eligibility requirements, exceptions, and renomination policies, as well as links to application materials and selection procedures.

All nominees are asked to complete the FACET Readiness Assessment form to help determine their preparedness for the selection process and identify areas where application materials may need further development.

Beginning in Spring 2025, nominations are due by April 1 for all campuses. Faculty interested in membership are encouraged to connect with their campus associate director early in the process to discuss eligibility requirements, timelines, and next steps.

Eligibility

For faculty pursuing membership through the nomination and selection process, candidates must:

  • Teaching must be a primary responsibility for the faculty member, typically with a minimum of one course taught per semester.
  • Must be in good standing (not under review or improvement plan). Your campus associate director will confirm good standing with your EVCAA or VPFAA shortly after your campus' nomination deadline.
  • Full-time tenure-track and tenured faculty, full-time non-tenure-track lecturers, teaching professors, professors of practice, faculty with full-time clinical teaching assignments (e.g., medicine, nursing, law, optometry), and librarians with significant teaching responsibilities are eligible for nomination.
  • Faculty have completed five years of teaching at a FACET-eligible campus by June 1st of the year in which they are nominated. Or, faculty who have accrued two years or more of full-time teaching experience at other universities and have completed three years of full-time teaching at a FACET-eligible campus by June 1st of the year in which they are nominated. Years as a visiting professor or lecturer count toward requirements as long as the candidate is currently in a full-time position (non-visiting).
  • Nominees should be able to document and demonstrate their approach to teaching and their impact on learning in and beyond the classroom. They may have won Distinguished Teaching Awards, but nominations are neither restricted to that group of faculty, nor is there a fixed quota for any discipline, rank, or campus.

Procedure for Exceptions

Campus associate directors can submit an exception request for an eligible candidate. They must contact the FACET Executive Director and provide a rationale for the exception. The FACET Executive Director and Membership, Recruitment, and Outreach Director review the request and if it's determined to have merit, the case presented to the FACET Steering Committee. If the exception is approved, the FACET Executive Director will communicate the decision of the Steering Committee to the candidate with copies to the Chair of the Statewide Selection Committee and the campus associate director(s).

Once an exception is granted, the candidate may then prepare and submit a dossier to their Campus Selection Committee for consideration. Exceptions are valid for one year. If the individual chooses not to submit a dossier in the next year, the exception expires and the case would need to be considered again.

Possible situations for which an exception might be made include, but not limited to:

  • Time: current requirement is five years (full-time) in the Indiana University system; exception may be granted for those who have been teaching in the IU system for less than five years but have teaching experience at other universities.
  • Teaching status: current requirement is that a person must be teaching students with a minimum of one course per semester.
  • Peer Review: current requirement is that a person must have two peer reviews conducted within the past four years, with one being conducted in the last two years. An exception might be granted for those with peer reviewers outside of Indiana University.

Renomination Process

  • A nomination is valid for two academic years from initial submission of a dossier.

  • A letter from the Statewide Selection Committee inviting resubmission serves as a nomination and is valid for the following two academic years. If the candidate resubmits within the two-year timeframe, they may go directly to the Statewide Selection Committee. If it's after the two years, they will need to go back to the campus selection committee and have EVCAA/VPUE approval.

  • In the event that a candidate receives a letter from the Statewide Selection Committee advising that they are not ready for FACET induction, the candidate may self-nominate if ready two years after the date of the letter.
